Featured Tech The Mandala is an electronic drum and percussion tool that translates strike position into control signals for producing sound. Invented by technologist and musician Vince De Franco (who also invented the Dimension Beam/D-Beam, now licensed to Roland Corporation), the Mandala was developed while he was working with Tool’s drummer Danny Carey. It is the only instrument of its kind that translates contact position into control signals for producing sound and taps into musicians’ intuitive musical abilities to enhance their playing. The Mandala mk2.9 is an HD position sensitive MIDI instrument that works with music production software either live or in the studio. The pad has Virtual Brain v3 software with samples of over 600 instruments and a suite of professional effects and simply plugs into a USB port. I interviewed Vince in early October, and he said, “What I’m doing with introducing the Mandala is telling people across the board about it – the ones that are already associated with and familiar with electronics who will be naturally drawn to the Mandala but also traditional acoustic drummers. We’re exposing this to all of them, because there are elements of it that can make parts of the experience of being a drummer easier and also open up their mind in different directions … All of a sudden the language they’re speaking is totally different, and they’re speaking it beautifully. The Mandala helps release a lot of expression and adds more colors to the palette.” I got to talk to Vince about what inspired his musical inventions, and how they work for artists that want to expand their horizons. Featured Artist The Kopecky Family Band is a Nashville-based six piece founded in Fall 2007 at Belmont University that combines elements of classical, jazz, rock and indie pop. Members have built up the band, its social media presence and a strong following very organically through a combination of regular live shows and diligent marketing in their local market, touring, meaningful, personal fan interaction and on-going formal music training and practice.   Under the leadership of Gabe Simon (guitar, vocals) and the band’s namesake Kelsey Kopecky (vocals, keyboards), other members Steven Holmes, Corey Oxendine, Markus Midkiff and David Krohn bring additional instrumental textures including bass, cello, drums and other percussion implements to the mix, creating an orchestral sound with pop sensibilities, and lyrics that began as late-night discussions between college friends and have evolved into poetry that explores some of life’s universal themes. After establishing a powerful presence in the college community, The Kopecky Family Band released its first EP, Embraces in 2008. In Spring 2010, members used their van – which they called “The War Wagon” – and began to tour music festivals, starting with SXSW and eventually catching the ear of industry representatives at a performance at Next Big Nashville. The band’s next self-produced EP The Disaster was released in August 2010 and featured the talents of Partners in Crime, Russ Long and Chris Grainger (Wilco). Kopecky Family Band members continue to maintain close relationships with each other and with fans, through regular online and offline marketing. Due to the storm, I am reaching out to you a bit late this month, but I wanted to touch base and share some bright spots from my October conversations as well as some new music I discovered and a great new piece of technology for musicians. Featured Article How good is your press kit? Even if you think it’s stellar, you’re likely still overwhelmed by all the marketing strategies that you have to manage by yourself in the modern industry. There’s promotion, publicity, merchandising, blogging – the list goes on and on. And it will not get shorter as technology continues to advance. Now that Facebook and Twitter have been around for a while, most artists have a great handle on social media and engaging with their fans. But where many fall short is in representing themselves professionally.  A few weeks ago, I talked to Ben Maitland-Lewis, the CEO and Founding Alchemist of Indie Ambassador, a collection of entrepreneurs with backgrounds in music, business technology and marketing who help artists of all shapes and sizes navigate the ever-changing modern music industry. And he confirmed that as the options increase for bands, members are getting more confused about how to put their best feet forward:  “I get a lot of emails from bands that have four, five or six links to social media sites and ask me to discover their brand on my own and hope I will interpret it correctly … One of the things we are trying to do with Indie Ambassador is make sense of all the great tools that help bands connect with fans, venues, etc. and help artists communicate with people who can actually get them opportunities for exposure.” The ever-growing challenges of brand management among DIY artists are exactly why his company launched Presskit.to, a tool that helps artists put together the pieces of a well-crafted press kit and build relationships with their fans and music industry professionals. Ben talked to me about how he came to found his company and what Presskit.to is all about. He also delivered some advice about important steps artists need to take to be successful once they have great marketing pieces that truly represent their music and their missions. Replace a list of all your albums with just your best two or three songs – the songs you need me to listen to … right now. Define a message for yourself that allows you to properly communicate your brand – your creative identity and your music – to the channel you want to get it to. For example, if you’re looking for an agent, you want to cater that message to an agent. Understand what that person is and what he’s done and address him personally. If you want to get into a publishing deal or get on a tour, it’s the same thing. You have to hyper focus your initiatives.
