Next, take five more breaths while holding a note for the
entire breath. The note should remain the same in pitch
and tone during the entire breath.
Pick a note that is close to your speaking voice. Notes
that fall lower on the scale will help your throat relax.
For the next five breaths raise the volume of the note
from silent to a mid range volume and back to silent
during the breath. You can use a different pitch for each
of the five breaths.
Finally, Repeat the last portion of the exercise five more
times. During each repeat change the timbre of your voice.
Your timbre should change faster than the volume.
To accomplish this use the vowels – a,e,i,o,u. As you go
through the exercise it will sound like you are chanting
the vowels.
*Tip Number Two – Body position is important. When you are
in front of a microphone your abdominal muscles should be
tight and hold your body erect.
Your throat should be relaxed. A relaxed throat allows the
air to flow with ease.
*Tip Number Three – talking can put a great strain on your
vocal chords. A great tip is to not talk! Performers’
contracts sometimes stipulate that they must remain silent
so many hours before a performance.
*Tip Number Four – A basic tip used by many vocalists
involves the ear.
First, move the left ear and touch it to your shoulder
when you exhale. Count to ten. Circle your head to the
front and count to ten. Move so your right ear is on your
shoulder and count to ten.
Raise your head and count to ten. Finally, do this steps
again in the opposite direction.
*Tip number Five – Make sure to relax your jaw. It is
natural to want to clench your jaw and many new singers
have to fight to overcome this urge.
*Tip Number Six – Find additional ways to relax. Great
singing will not happen unless you are relaxed. You may
choose to include relaxation exercises like the one above
in your pre-show or pre-practice warm ups.
