Are you looking for great new tips to expand your vocal range?
All singers know that success comes with expanding and increasing their singing range. It is important for a vocalist to hit the high notes effortlessly.
Let’s start with the basics:
Vocal Range – Discover your personal vocal range – the range within which you are currently comfortable singing without putting a strain on your voice.
You must know your current range if you want to enlarge it!
To find your current range start with the middle C note and step down on the scale by half-notes until your voice is no longer comfortable and you can no longer produce a crisp and clear note/tone. Do the same exercise for your high range. When you stop you will immediately know where you need to begin expanding your range. Ranges include soprano, alto, tenor, bass.
Do Not Push – Do not strain your voice by pushing too far, too fast. It is possible to increase or decrease one to two steps over several months with dedicated practice. However, you will put your vocal chords at risk if you attempt to expand your range to an octave in two months! Athletes work to build their muscles. As a vocalist, you will also work over a period of time to slowly build vocal strength. This is known as conditioning your voice. It gives your voice power and amazing flexibility. Vocal Warm Ups – Again, like athletes, a vocalist must warm up vocal muscles to prevent damage.
Warm ups stretch the vocal muscles and prepare them for singing.
This is extremely important for anyone hoping to expand their vocal range.
Monkey See, Monkey Do – Working in front of a mirror is a fantastic way to increase your vocal range. Being able to watch yourself sing gives instant feedback on posture and jaw position. Remember, everything should be still as you reach for those high notes except for one little vocal chord. A
mirror will show you if you are moving your upper body – your shoulders or neck – and constricting your vocal chords.
Play Back – Most people do not like to hear their own voices and singers are no exception when it comes to home recordings.
This should not stop you from recording your voice and playing it back to listen for inconsistencies and mistakes.
With the availability of video cameras it is now easy to video record your performance with sound and watch your entire performance. This allows you to critique your voice, posture and form.
Now, let’s move on to some interesting tips:
Sing the scales. If you are working on a higher range, work up the scale, lower ranges can work lower. It is best to vary back and forth and exercise all the vocal muscles. This is the absolute greatest way to increase the range of your vocals. Consistent practice with this exercise will get you the results you want! Don’t Forget the Diaphragm – Do not forget that you must use your diaphragm when singing. If you are not getting the results you feel you should it may be that you are not utilizing your complete diaphragm.
Practice, Practice – Practice is the only way your range will expand over time. On the other hand, do not destroy your voice by over-practicing. It is easy for someone to get very excited about expanding their vocal range and start their program with guns blazing. Consistency is the key.
