This is yet another Burning question from one of the candidates on the 7 Inspirational Steps Programme.
I think a lot of acts really don’t know who to listen to when it comes to Getting their acts together. All sorts of people will want to have a say about what sort of songs they think you should be doing, what you should wear, how you should act.
My advice is to simply be yourself and be true to yourself. If you are trying to be something you are not, then you’ll probably end up being very similar to a lot of other acts all doing the same. If you listen to your own heart and follow your passion, noone else’s act will be quite the same as yours because you are unique and noone ever has been, or ever will be quite the same as you. You are special! so don’t try to be something you are not!
With this in mind, create your shows out of your passion and let your X factor shine for all to see. If you want to find out what I think the X Factor actually means, then just put X factor in the search bar and it will bring up my article. Once you’ve created your unique masterpiece (by this I don’t mean you’ve got to do songs that noone else is doing – It will be unique because of the way you put it together, your understanding and emotion that you attach to each of the songs in your show, and the way you explain what you are doing to your audience via your patter / rapport.
Ok, so you’ve got your masterpiece ready and you’re pleased with yourself. What do you do now?
Market research – find out where your shows will best fit! I know this goes against all Marketing Theory but I think in showbiz it’s slightly different because YOU are the product and unless you want to be a Tribute Act i.e. pretend to be someone else, your Unique Selling Point is the fact that you are YOU and nobody else.
Be honest with yourself! Is your show going to work in all types of Venues? or is it more suited to a particular type of venue? Once you’ve decided where best to concentrate your efforts then do research into that market segment and then do a Marketing Campaign to suit it. This may sound like a lot of hard work but it’s worth it. So for example if you’ve decided that your act will work better in Hotels than in Clubs and Pubs you’ll need to target that segment.
